Phillip Rison, CMAA, has been named the Associate Executive Director for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), effective July 1, 2016. The NIAAA is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rison, from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, is the current Executive Director of the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Association.
Mr. Rison is retired from the Montgomery County Schools where most recently he was assistant superintendent responsible for student personnel, school improvement and district operations. He oversaw county-wide athletics, transportation, and food service, as well as buildings and grounds. Prior to central office duties he was director of athletics/assistant principal of Montgomery County High School, and earlier served as a teacher coach for the school. He also had previous experience as an athletic administrator and assistant principal at two additional Kentucky high schools, as well as having earlier taught and coached at a third.

Phil has a long history of leadership within the NIAAA, and he will bring that knowledge and experience with him to Indianapolis. Phil has a passion for education-based athletics, and will serve as a strong advocate for continued growth and success in the future.”
Rison holds a master’s degree from Morehead State University in Leadership Education, and previously earned a B.S. degree in business education from Eastern Kentucky University. He became a Certified Master Athletic Administrator in 2005, and earlier earned the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA). He also holds a school superintendent and secondary principal certification.
NIAAA involvement includes selection as president of the Board of Directors in 2013, and Phil has been a national faculty member of the Leadership Training Institute serving on the team of instructors for three sports law courses. He represented Section 2 as a member of the NIAAA Board, serving from 2010 to 2014.

Rison has taught LTI courses, and conducted workshops at a number of state conferences, was president of the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Association for two years and president of the Kentucky State Coaches Association in 1995. He was the KHSADA Athletic Director of the Year in 2003, and served the Kentucky High School Athletic Association for 10 years as chairman of the 10th/11th Region Policy Board. In 2015, Rison was named State District Level Administrator of the Year by the Kentucky Association School Resources Officers.
He was awarded the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award in 2008, and also has received the NIAAA State Award of Merit for Kentucky. He and wife Paula have two adult children; a son, married daughter and one grandchild. The Rison’s will relocate to Indianapolis.
